WiW: 10.2 - "You look so old fashioned!"

Oh geez. It was really cold out so I thought I would rock my wool skirt of a longer length. Not too well received. Got various comments about this outfit being from the 1920's or the 1940's from different people throughout the day.

I thought it was fine. Kind of simple and not too exciting, what do you ladies think??

Maybe my backwaters are not ready for longer lengths yet?

I am thinking booties might have been a better choice. The long boots make you appear shorter in my opinion with this particular look. That's my first thought.

  • annagybe replied 10 years ago

I was thinking booties too. And maybe a blazer instead of a cardigan. Getting little old librarian vibe right now.

I like the skirt a lot! I think shorter boots and a blazer would modernize it too.

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

The skirt is really a great colour. I am sorry people feel so free to make their comments. I actually like the way you've tied it all together. Oh well.

Ah, can't wait for my booties to come!! :3 I am missing the styling options quite a bit!! I need to take this skirt to the tailor regardless.

Ah, didn't even think of a blazer. Next time!

I think I too would prefer booties as I just like to see a little leg with skirts, you know?  And I can see how a blazer would make it look more modern.  But I do have a soft spot for the librarian look and do it myself once in a while.  I tend to play up the steampunk aspects of it when I do though (things like lace-up boots, waistcoats, etc).

Eh (shrug), people are strange.  I think you look nice.  It doesn't look like it is taken straight from a street style blog, but it doesn't look old fashioned or dowdy.  For many of the people I see strolling around the shopping malls or streets, this would be a total win.  It is nicely put together and well fitted.

I think it looks cute, but I like the idea of a blazer and booties! And people can be very strange. To me, your outfit doesn't look old-fashioned.

  • abc replied 10 years ago

I think they're saying it looks so old fashioned because it is not as fresh as most of your other outfits.  Look at it this way, the outfit is fine, they're just so used to you looking fab, they are spoiled.

  • MuseumGal replied 10 years ago

I don't think you look old-fashioned at all - in fact I think you look wonderful and professional.

  • Jaime replied 10 years ago

I think it is also the bow blouse over the cardigan. People are just commenting on their first impressions and bow+cardigan+long skirt (and not anything about your pieces in particular) are forming their reactions.

  • Deborah replied 10 years ago

I dont think this looks old fashioned:)  It is maybe a little more classic than your usual.  I think you look great.

  • Beth Ann replied 10 years ago

Your usual silhouette (shorter skirts and jackets) has been dominant in fashion for quiet a while, but I suspect that longer lengths in skirts AND toppers are on their way back!  I'm ready for the change, and I actually like boots that touch skirts as another choice.

This look does have a bit of a retro feel.  I think I might try a sharper, more modern jacket on top to add more structure, but I like it as is!

  • suzyq replied 10 years ago

You look fab.  Maybe folks are just used to seeing you in a fit and flare and this is a wee more classic.

  • rachylou replied 10 years ago

1920s! 1940s! Crazy talk. You need granny boots to get closer to those decades... of course, then you'll look totally modern.

    Mwahaha!

  • Lantana replied 10 years ago

I'm going to throw another decade into the mix - the 70's.
I was there and I wore boots and skirts exactly like that with slim fitting tops.
It was a pretty look then and it is now. I think you look just as fab in this retro look as you do in your more modern looks. Penny

Thanks! I had a fun night - nothing too crazy going on; but man, it's hard to get in and out of the car with a long skirt without a slit. Almost fell out! HAHA.

I think you ladies are right, it's a bit of a departure from what people are used to seeing me in.

Someone else at the cafeteria also asked if I send my paycheque directly to Anthropologie. I gave her a strange look, "You mean, for these earrings?" :p Strange.

ohhh please That's not old fashioned, that's retro!
Your style is classic, feminine and very retro!

  • Amy replied 10 years ago

I like the look too! It's pretty and feminine...not frumpy

  • Helena replied 10 years ago

I love the cardi and don't find it old-fashioned looking at all; it fits great and is figure-flattering. Love the idea of shorter boots! You look great imho!

  • AnnieMouse replied 10 years ago

Nothing about this gives me a 20s/40s vibe, though I can see why the bow blouse with cardi would feel a little more vintage-y than your usual - I'm with Lantana on having a more 70s feel, via the silhouette. I think it looks quite crisp, however, not frumpy at all, and I rather like it on you.
