Packing lists ... My OCPD Ways

I have a tendency to overpack my bags, so in order to overcome this, I tried to plan for my upcoming trip with specific articles of clothing I am going to wear on particular days.

I have also built in alternatives in case I get bored or the weather is yucky.

There aren't actually a lot of things I need to bring! I may bring two pairs of jeans, though.

I haven't made any trips since I joined YLF and became much more concerned about how I dressed...I can only imagine what it would be like packing for a trip now! Before, I'd just pack whatever. Now...I recoil in horror just thinking about the mental exertion putting together coherent outfits for each day would require. Good for you for being so organized! And even having alternates...you are one smart cookie!

Fabulous. This is exactly what I do. Dear Dr. Anthropologie, please tell me it's NOT truly OCD?!

  • lyn* replied 10 years ago

Thanks, ladies. I have created a master list too!

I am OCPD, thankfully not OCD though! :)

  • JAileen replied 10 years ago

Yes, I think it is OCD - my mother does this, on the computer!

  • lyn* replied 10 years ago

Man, my computer is at home so I had to use Pen and paper and markers.

  • Ornella replied 10 years ago

I like to see someone else is also fond of colourful pencils. Crucial tool for successful planning and organising IMHO :-D

My mother also had a general packing list, a camping packing list, and a household supplies shopping list. We never ran out of cleanser or toilet paper or anything. When computers became available she really came into her element. She should have been an efficiency expert.

Wow. I wish I was more organized.

I always run out of toilet paper.

Two pairs of jeans and a pen and paper list.....? Ok, I'll give you OCPD..... :-) have fun on your conference!

I love this! Good job. Nothing wrong with some minor obsessions or compulsions right??

  • Kristin L replied 10 years ago

Smart thinking! There's nothing wrong with a little OCD. Have fun at your conference!

Ha! I'm not quite that thorough (no color coding) but I definitely do this. And then end up throwing two more outfits in the bag "just in case."

I definitely make packing lists! I have several of them saved in Evernote, like a list of cosmetics/makeup and a lake weekend list, because they don't vary too much.

I need to start my list for our FL trip- I leave in 2 weeks!

  • lyn* replied 10 years ago

Oooh, good call, I need a toiletries/makeup list!

  • Emily replied 10 years ago

I like the way you've broken down your list!  I do something similar with a google doc - on one sheet I list my itinerary and what I want to wear for each activity, and on another I break it down into an itemized list.  My template already has all my toiletries/electronics filled in.

  • E replied 10 years ago

Wait, there are people who don't make itemised packing lists? :o

  • Gracie replied 10 years ago

So organized – and how smart to have alternates. I have also done lists in the past but then keep stuffing "extras" in the bag at the last minute. It's always eye opening to come back and find out which things I did not wear/use.

  • lyn* replied 10 years ago

I also have a "must haves" list that I made one day - and it's surprising how many items on this list I didn't use in my outfit planning (or alternatives) - it has cut down my packing at least by half!

  • Sara L. replied 10 years ago

I'm not this organized although I wish I could be.  My sister is a chronic list maker (her motto is that "it's not a plan without a list") and plans her outfits for trips like this.

  • abc replied 10 years ago

HA!  Yours is the pen and paper version of what I do in Excel bc I am a super nerd!

  • Barbara replied 10 years ago

I keep an inventory of my clothing and shoes in excel. For a trip I plan by copying and pasting into a new sheet. I haven't gotten around to jewelry or scarves yet!
