A Retrospective: WIW 5 Years Ago - 10 Hilarious Pictures

Haha; my mother was saying that she found a bunch of my old clothes from before I moved out to go to medical school and would I want them now? It got me thinking about what I wore 5 years ago - and here's a snapshot of the pics I could find that reflected my style back then.

I don't know what I would call it? Walmart Boho? HAHA. And omg, those are some terrible dresses in #6 and #8. I wouldn't be caught dead in those these days!

And a bonus pic of me in pants - #10 - actual dress pants for my white coat ceremony. Ugh. What a terrible fitting top too! :)

At least I still like bright pink (#3) and square necks (#3, 7, 9) ... but man, that jacket in #1 is just absolutely dreadful. I was surprised I owned a white shirt (#3, #2) - because I thought I never did!

Glad I'm outta that phase of my life - NO MOM I DO NOT WANT THOSE CLOTHES BACK!

Hope you all had a good laugh :)

PS: The cat in #1 is not my kitty. His name is Buddy and he's not soft, even though he looks like he would be. He's actually really greasy feeling :(

you looked cute then and now. i think you grew into your style. holy breasts, batman! what support did you have under #8???

you would never catch me posting photos from my, ummm, youth. let's just say i have selective memory loss and leave it at that.

  • lyn* replied 11 years ago

    :| I don't think I wore any support in #8. Let's not talk about it - ROFL.

  • goldenpig replied 11 years ago

You look so cute esp in #7 with the pink cowboy hat! And wow, your hair was so long! Fun to look back on where we've been. Your style has really matured and blossomed in such a short time! I love your style and wish I was where you are now, when I was your age (does that make sense?). I did a before and after YLF thread myself shortly after I joined, with some pics of my pre-YLF embarrassing style too:

They don't look so bad! You look like a young student. I'd say you're style is definitely more refined now, though.

  • Suz replied 11 years ago

You've made huge strides in every way, Lyn!! Amazing.

Do you remember a time when it started to come together for you more? Was it having a bit more disposable income? Or moving away from home? What was the impetus, do you think?

  • Kalli replied 11 years ago

Your style has evolved although I wouldn't feel ashamed of the past either. Myself I would never be brave enough to post here of my 20s, apparently I used to love low necklines and short everything ;).

  • cobaltblue replied 11 years ago

You look so cute in #8! Your style quotient has definitely skyrocketed in the last five years. :)

  • Karie replied 11 years ago

I think your style was cute back then! It is definitely more polished now, though. And I love the descriptor, "Walmart Boho!"

  • Day Vies replied 11 years ago

Oh, Lyn, be proud of who you were. You only get to be to lovely person you are today by making the "mistakes" you made then. Someone once told me that experience is what you get when you don't get what you want.

  • siniestra replied 11 years ago

    >_< def screams student but nothing wrong with it ;)

  • Angie replied 11 years ago

Adorable! You look amazing with long hair :)

  • Ingunn replied 11 years ago

Could it be that you did so much homework that you never had time for shopping, to earn enough points for med studies? ;) I definitely think you were a beautiful young woman already then, albeit I agree that now you are somewhat more fashion forward. #3 is particularly charming!

  • jayne replied 11 years ago

What I find interesting is that there are all the elements of your current style, a touch of Aline, black and white, simple, clean lines. Maybe harder to see :)

  • rae replied 11 years ago

Aw, very cute! You were experimenting back then. Just hadn't found your groove yet, but honestly nothing is outright bad. :) I wore a lot of weird thrift shop stuff back in the day.

  • Jenava replied 11 years ago

I like the pink cowboy hat! Looks like you had a thing for the cross-body bags. (-: So practical!

  • Julie replied 11 years ago

I see from #8 that you were ahead of me when it came to wearing jeans with a dress. Really cool hair, too.

    Cheers

    Julie

Lyn, you looked EXACTLY like the college student you were and were very cute for that setting. I'm sure you fit into the environmental norm and probably dressed better than a lot of the pre-med students. Please don't be embarrassed. You definitely were not a candidate for WNTW! I mean, how many college age (versus older returnee) college students have the style and polish you now have? I dare you to find ANY!!!!

  • lyn* replied 11 years ago

Thanks, ladies ... I think "student style" is a very generous approach to my dressing back then!

@ Natalie - :) The pre YLF you was so cute, but I love the new you too! It's funny how I used to associate people who dressed nicely as being uncomfortable, but it's so not true... You're going to be one rockin' mama x3 soon!

@ Suz - I think it was being able to buy my own clothes that made a big difference. Also, I could see that the people in higher up years (and in my own year) had their act together and their clothes! They're always very well dressed and it was very intimidating! I called home many-a-time to tell my mom I don't think I'm doing it right :|

@ Kalli - Ah, but that's the time of your life you can get away with things like that!

@ Rhonda - That's a useful saying; I should use it all the time on the wards. I am gaining valuable "experience" here doing scut work :p

@ Angie - It was so hard to take care of, though!

@ Ingunn - Maybe? I came from a small town and everyone dresses like that. If I go back and wear jeans + blouse people will come up to you and ask why you're dressed so fancy and what is going on? If you're wearing heels, then you are going to a wedding or a funeral.

@ Jayne - you must squint very hard ;)

@ Rae - I think most of my stuff is from the thrift shop - I don't have any pics of the bridesmaid dress that I wore for a long time. Oh dear.

@ Jenava - I think it was the same bag; I only had one bag back then! :p

@ Julie - I think I just forgot to shave my legs that day. HAHAHA.

@ Donna - I dunno, they have their tunic + leggings + Uggs thing locked down pretty well, and they do the makeup thing pretty well too. I still haven't managed to figure out how to wear eyeliner or mascara or do crazy stuff like that ... :) Oh well.

  • harmonica replied 11 years ago

So cute! You look adorable and you've really went a long way from there to where you are now! Isn't that great to see that one can evolve and learn so much if you put in the time and energy? :-) Your outfits reminded me of my days as a student ;-)

  • DonnaF replied 11 years ago

Lyn, I turn 60 in May and I'm still trying to learn how to do the mascara thing! I thought I had eyeliner down, but the eyes get a bit droopy as one ages so what worked in years past no longer does. I'm working on learning how to curl my stick straight lashes, but I get too lazy to heat the curler. Hate it when the lashes have points rather than a curve. I was a bit of a hippie in my day so I missed the key developmental stage of learning the makeup thing.

  • cheryl replied 11 years ago

You are adorable! I love the long hair :)

  • lyn* replied 11 years ago

@Donna - Yeah; I missed that key part in my life too. I also missed "how to make friends with girls" and "how to find an appropriate dating partner" ... I got a whole smack of "how to win piano festivals" and "how to get into medical school or else you will be a loser forever"

    >__O

  • Mander replied 11 years ago

I think you look cute in these, myself, especially the one with the pink cowboy hat! Maybe not so sophisticated but perfectly appropriate for student days.

I wonder if I even *have* any photos of myself from my undergraduate wannabe hippie days... those were some seriously painful looks. **shudder**

  • krishnidoux replied 11 years ago

Lyn, this is super cool! Thanks for sharing this. You really looked very nice as a young student - except in 1, maybe, I admit... but we all have those days... ;-)

What an evolution in style! You have changed and really grown into your own personal beautiful style. Photo 6 is one of the most evocative I would say, because in it you are wearing a dress but it is just so wrong on you! Compared to what you have gotten us used to seeing. Your style is gamine, refined, a bit eclectic. But these are boho, whimsical or hippie/sporty (a style I myself, another gamine, erred into as well quite a bit in my day).

I can see through these old outfits though, how you were always attracted to quality, simplicity, intelligence, comfort and feminine details. These all translate so much better in your current way of dressing, and put you in the forefront (not the clothes).

You always had it. It's just that as a student you weren't able to express it with as much precision, and pizazz, as you can now.
